How Was Germany Heat Pump Market in First Quarter of 2023?

Date:2023-05-26 17:13:04 Hits: 0

Against the backdrop of the European energy crisis, more and more countries are banning the use of fossil fuels for heating, and turning to energy-efficient heat pumps as the primary strategy for decarbonization. Germany is a country with a long history of heat pump applications. Under the pressure of such a crisis, the deployment of heat pumps has been accelerated and outstanding results have been achieved.

Heat pump sales grew by 111% in First Quarter of 2023

The statistics from the Federation of German Heating Industry (BDH) - an organization comprising 104 member companies and two associations in Germany, shows that the heat pump sales in the first quarter of 2023 reached 96,500 units, growing by 111% compared to the first quarter of 2022. The figures prove that heat pumps are increasingly in high demand in Germany.

Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022, the gas supply has been insufficient, which further caused roaring gas prices. The volatile energy price is a main factor for people to look for affordable, efficient, and reliable heating alternatives.

Germany bans most new oil and gas heating systems from 2024

There are 30 million homes heated on fossil fuels, which causes increasing climate problems in living sections. On April 19, 2023, the Germany government approved that new heating systems must run on 65% renewable energy from 2024, and also proposed that houses could use heat pumps that run on renewable electricity. The country also expects that such heat pump expansion and production will help to make the energy switch cheaper.

By 2045, the use of fossil heating systems will be banned completely in Germany, when Germany aims to have made its economy entirely climate neutral.

Heat pump stands out to be a mainstream heating solution for their 300% higher efficiency compared with traditional energy heating solutions. With heat pump technology advancing over time, the price becomes totally affordable for households. Additionally, being properly installed and maintained, the heat pumps can last for use for 15-20 years.
