How is Heat Pump in the U.S. and Ireland

Air-to-water (air source ) heat pumps run on free outside air heat and electricity instead of fossil gas, and are three times more efficient than gas furnaces for heating. Besides heating, the multifunctional heat pumps can act as air conditioners in hot summer and water heaters all year round, serving as a triple-duty appliance.

The technology is widely promoted in replacing traditional energy-driven heaters in new buildings and retrofitting old buildings, and in effect, it reduces the energy bills for people and carbon emissions for the world.

For the NET-ZERO target by 2030, the world pick up the heat pump as a strategic measure for efficient and clean home heating applications since heat pumps are proven with high efficiency, less energy consumption, and low carbon emission than other methods.

Heat pump sales in U.S. surged past gas furnaces in 2022

In 2022, the total sales of heat pumps in the United States exceeded 4 million, while the sales of gas furnaces beneath 4 million. It was the first time in 2022 that the heat pump’s sales surged past gas furnaces. Moreover, as shown in the figure below, the two have pulled out a significant gap in sales.

This is a good sign that more Americans are installing heat pumps for homes, ready to try new technologies to keep their home warm. In northern areas, the residents are in urgent need of stable heating supply to survive the long winter, so the heat pumps that can provide comfortable space heating are perfect solutions.

Ireland air-to-water heat pump grant increased to €6500/unit

SEAI is Ireland's national sustainable energy authority, working with householders, businesses, communities, and government to create a cleaner energy future. To keep pace with urgent deployment for clean energy application, in 2023, it releases grant support for first-time heat pump installation and home retrofit with a heat pump by adding €3000， making from €3500 up to €6500/unit for the installment of air to water heat pump system.

The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (Deputy Eamon Ryan) states on 7 March 2023, “It is important to note that local authority retrofits and heat pump installations are in addition to the figures provided here. ”

Also, “My Department is working with SEAI to build on the strong performance of 2022. A record €356 million in funding has been allocated to SEAI for residential and community retrofit for 2023 to support the delivery of 37,000 retrofits this year”.

The European countries are leading the world in heat pump imports and applications, which have a long history of balancing a good living environment and economy.
